What Is the Opening Price?

The opening price is the point during an exchange's trading session at which the first price of the day is determined.

How it works

An opening also occurs at the start of the morning session and again when the afternoon session resumes. The opening price can differ significantly from the previous day's closing price, and stocks with major news out tend to attract particular attention at this point.

Difference from the closing price

While the opening price is the price determined at the start of trading, the closing price (see related page) is the price determined at the end of the day's trading. Both are determined using the same itayose method.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is the opening price determined?
It is determined by a method called itayose, in which all the buy and sell orders outstanding up to that point are matched, and the single price that allows the largest number of orders to be executed is set as the opening price.
What happens if I place an order before the market opens?
Orders placed before trading begins accumulate in the order book and are reflected in the opening itayose. They are not executed the instant trading begins.
